On our last full day in New Orleans, we wanted to get a bit more birding in. We stopped by Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge, which is very close to the city. It, too, suffered extreme damage during Katrina.
They had a very nice display which discussed the wildlife that lives there:
In the large tree, there is a hawk perched. We watched her fly around and located her in several different trees during our hike:
We saw this snake only because it made noise. I had been hoping to see another rail!
More ducks:
Driving along, we'd stop occasionally and walk a few meters into the brush alongside the highway, hoping to see things. Incredibly, this worked quite well -- there is so much to see in Louisiana! Here was part of a large flock of black-crowned night-herons. We were very luck to get to see so many, and during the day!A closer view:
We also got to see another black rail, though he was too far away to photograph well.
We decided that though we'd seen quite a bit of wildlife, we couldn't leave New Orleans without seeing the famed Vieux Carre. We dropped the car off at the apartment and took the streetcar downtown. Brian is waiting at the stop which was about 2 minutes away from our apartment:Approaching streetcars, and someone walking on the streetcar tracks:Blatently disobeying the rules as it very clearly stated to keep your head inside the car at all times!Self-portrait:Waiting at Cafe du Monde for our beignets. We should only have ordered one portion -- it was huge!We walked to a bench and ate them there. They were very powdery; unfortunately there was such a mess that we forgot to take pictures. We walked around a bit more and eventually made our way back home for our last night in New Orleans.
